I went to Trader Joe’s and saw that unusual lettuce sold in packages. It had tiny cute crisp green leaves. The name of the lettuce on the package was Mache Lettuce, and the package also noted the lettuce’s alternate name – Lamb’s Lettuce. The package with lamb’s lettuce also had an orange sticker that said “Great With Avocadoes”. So I came back from Trader Joe’s with the mache lamb’s lettuce and a couple of avocadoes, ready to make a yummy new salad!
Here’s a picture of Trader Joe’s package of Mache (Lamb’s) Lettuce:

- Start by making the vinaigrette: add the olive oil and balsamic vinegar to a bowl and whisk them together until well combined.

- Gently toss the lettuce with the dressing until every leaf is lightly coated.
- Next, prepare the avocado by peeling, pitting, and slicing it thinly.
- Arrange the dressed lettuce on a serving plate, then place the avocado slices on top.
- Serve the salad right away to enjoy its fresh, vibrant flavors.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve alongside grilled chicken kabobs, baked catfish, or roasted skirt steak for a balanced, satisfying meal.
- Pair with a bowl of chili soup recipe, egg drop soup, or salmon soup in canned.
- Top with a sprinkle of nuts, like almonds or candied walnuts, for extra crunch and flavor.
- Add a sprinkle of crumbled goat cheese or feta for a hint of creamy, tangy flavor.
- Enjoy it as a light starter before a pasta or rice-based main dish to keep the meal fresh and vibrant.
Tips For Success
- Choose ripe but firm avocados: To get the best texture, make sure your avocados are ripe but not overly soft. A ripe avocado should yield slightly to gentle pressure without feeling mushy.
- Use fresh mache lettuce: Since mache lettuce has a delicate texture, use it soon after purchasing for maximum freshness. Look for vibrant green leaves with no signs of wilting.
- Balance the dressing: The 3-to-1 ratio of olive oil to balsamic vinegar provides a smooth, balanced dressing. If you prefer a tangier taste, add a little more vinegar, tasting as you go.
- Dress the lettuce just before serving: To keep the lettuce crisp, toss it with the dressing right before serving. This way, the leaves won’t wilt and will stay fresh.
- Slice avocado carefully: Use a sharp knife to slice the avocado thinly for a beautiful presentation. You can fan the slices out on top of the salad for a visually appealing look.
Variations And Substitutions
- Switch up the greens: If mache lettuce isn’t available, you can substitute it with arugula, baby spinach, or mixed greens. These will offer a similar tender texture and fresh flavor, though each brings its own unique taste.
- Add some crunch: For extra texture, toss in a handful of nuts or seeds, like sunflower seeds, chopped walnuts, or slivered almonds. This adds a satisfying crunch and boosts the salad’s nutritional value.
- Boost the protein: Turn this salad into a light meal by adding a protein source. Grilled chicken, hard-boiled eggs, or chickpeas pair nicely with the flavors and make it more filling.
- Try a different dressing: For a change in flavor, use a lemon vinaigrette or even a light honey mustard dressing. Both add a zesty, bright twist that complements the avocado.
- Add fresh herbs: Fresh herbs like basil, parsley, or chives can add a lovely aromatic touch to the salad. Sprinkle a few leaves or chopped herbs over the top for extra flavor.
Storage and Reheating
- Storing leftovers: If you have leftover salad, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Keep the avocado slices separate if possible to prevent browning.
- Best consumed fresh: This salad is best enjoyed immediately, as the delicate mache lettuce can wilt when stored. If you need to store it, consume it within 1 day for the best taste and texture.
- Revitalizing leftovers: If the lettuce has softened, try adding a handful of fresh greens before serving. Unfortunately, the avocado might not stay as vibrant, so adding fresh slices when ready to eat can improve the presentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
