Kitchen Tools You Need to Make Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

  • Air Fryer: The key tool for achieving crispy bacon and perfectly roasted asparagus.
  • Knife: For trimming the tough ends of the asparagus.
  • Cutting Board: To provide a clean surface for preparing the asparagus.

The salty and crispy exterior from the bacon pairs really well with the perfectly roasted asparagus. I love to make this when I’m short on time and need to put together something quick.

Want to make it extra fancy? Add a slice of cream cheese over the top of the asparagus before you wrap it in bacon and air fry it. The creaminess from the cheese is so yummy. You have to try it!

How To Air Fry Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

Before you start cooking, make sure to trim the asparagus by cutting off the tough stems. I sometimes also hold each asparagus stem by each of its ends and bend the stalk slightly until it snaps.

Take 2 asparagus stalks and wrap it with 1 slice of bacon, then put in the air fryer basket. I personally like to use thin bacon slices because they get crispy faster than thick-cut slices would.

Repeat the last step with the remaining bacon and asparagus.

Cook the bacon-wrapped asparagus in the air fryer at 400F for 8 minutes (no need to flip).

Cooking Tip

Make sure to not overcrowd the air fryer basket or the bacon will cook unevenly, so you may need to cook the asparagus in batches.

What To Serve With Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

If you are planning to serve this dish as an appetizer, I like to serve them as-is with a little drizzle of balsamic glaze over the top. The acidic flavor from the glaze pairs really nicely with the saltiness from the bacon!

If you serve the bacon-wrapped asparagus as a side dish, I highly recommend air-fried chicken legs or a juicy piece of steak with a loaded baked potato.

Tips for Success

  • Choose Fresh Asparagus: Look for firm, bright green stalks with tightly closed tips. Avoid limp or discolored asparagus for the best flavor and texture.
  • Trim Properly: Always cut or snap off the tough ends of the asparagus. This ensures you’re left with the most tender part of the stalk.
  • Use Thin Bacon: Thin-cut bacon cooks more evenly and crisps up faster in the air fryer. Thick-cut bacon may take longer and could result in undercooked asparagus.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Arrange the bacon-wrapped asparagus in a single layer in the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking. If you’re making a large batch, cook them in multiple rounds.
  • Serve Immediately: For the best texture and flavor, enjoy the bacon-wrapped asparagus right out of the air fryer while it’s hot and crispy.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Cheesy Upgrade: Add a small strip of cream cheese or shredded Parmesan to the asparagus before wrapping it in bacon. The creamy and salty addition elevates the flavor.
  • Spice It Up: Sprinkle the bacon with a dash of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika before wrapping it around the asparagus for a little heat.
  • Vegetarian Option: Skip the bacon and coat the asparagus with olive oil, salt, and garlic powder. Air fry until tender for a simple roasted asparagus alternative.
  • Turkey Bacon Swap: For a leaner option, use turkey bacon instead of traditional pork bacon. It crisps up nicely and pairs well with asparagus.
  • Herb-Infused Bacon: Brush the bacon slices with a mix of olive oil, rosemary, and thyme before wrapping for an herby, gourmet touch.
  • Sweet and Savory: Drizzle a bit of maple syrup or honey over the bacon-wrapped asparagus before air frying for a sweet twist.

Storage and Reheating

  • Storage: Place any leftover bacon-wrapped asparagus in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating in the Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F and cook the asparagus for 2-3 minutes until warmed through and crispy again.
  • Reheating in the Oven: Arrange the asparagus on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 5-7 minutes to retain its crispiness.
  • Microwave Option: While not recommended for maintaining crispiness, you can microwave leftovers for 30-45 seconds if you’re in a hurry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen asparagus?

Yes, you can! However, make sure to thaw and pat the asparagus dry before wrapping it in bacon. This helps prevent excess moisture, which can make the bacon less crispy.

What type of bacon works best?

Thin-cut bacon is ideal because it crisps up quickly in the air fryer. Thick-cut bacon may take longer to cook, potentially leaving the asparagus overcooked.

Can I make this recipe in the oven instead of an air fryer?

Absolutely! Preheat your oven to 400°F and bake the bacon-wrapped asparagus on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for about 20 minutes, turning halfway for even cooking.

How do I keep the bacon from unraveling?

If your bacon tends to come loose, use a toothpick to secure it in place. Just remember to remove the toothpicks before serving.

Is this recipe suitable for meal prep?

Yes! You can assemble the bacon-wrapped asparagus in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Cook just before serving for the best results.
