How To Make Air Fryer Portobello Mushrooms
First you’ll want to prep the air fryer. You can spray it with nonstick cooking spray or brush with oil.
Next season the mushrooms, gill side up. You’ll add salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Use a spatula to add mushrooms to the air fryer basket. Again, gill side up.
Set air fryer to 400 degrees for 8 minutes. Halfway through cooking time, carefully flip the mushrooms over and continue cooking.
Once done, remove portobello mushrooms from air fryer basket and plate for serving.
Cooking Tips
- Basic seasonings are suggested here, but you can use any seasonings you love on portobellos
- Be sure to flip mushrooms halfway through cooking time so they roast evenly and the gills don’t burn
- You can top these mushrooms with sauce, crumbled cheese, or roasted vegetables… Or slice and use in recipes like tacos, salads, and pasta
Is It Ok To Eat The Gills of a Portobello Mushroom?
Yes! The stems of the portobello are typically tough and fibrous, so they are usually discarded. But the gills are perfectly edible and delicious. The gills can, however, turn the rest of the ingredients a dark color. If you wish to avoid this, simply scrape out the gills before cooking the mushroom alongside other ingredients.
Should You Wash a Portobello Mushroom Before Cooking?
Yes, always wash mushrooms before cooking, to remove dirt and debris. First remove the stem, if one is attached, and then wipe the mushroom clean with a damp cloth or paper towel. You do not want to rinse mushrooms in water as they will soak up too much liquid and take on a tough texture.
