This recipe for making air fried potato wedges is really easy! It doesn’t require any fancy ingredients and the only equipment needed is an air fryer.  This is what you will need:

  • Russet Potatoes – The star of this recipe, Russet potatoes are perfect for making wedges due to their starchy texture, which helps achieve that crispy exterior while keeping the inside soft and fluffy.
  • Olive Oil – Just a small amount of olive oil is used to coat the potatoes, helping them crisp up beautifully in the air fryer without the need for deep frying.

Kitchen Tools You’ll Need To Make Air Fryer Potato Wedges

  • Air Fryer: Essential for cooking the potato wedges to crispy perfection without deep frying. The air fryer circulates hot air around the potatoes, ensuring they cook evenly with a nice, golden-brown finish.
  • Cutting Board: Used to safely cut the potatoes into wedges. A sturdy cutting board helps you slice through the potatoes with ease.
  • Sharp Knife: Necessary for cutting the Russet potatoes into uniform wedges. A sharp knife ensures clean cuts, which helps the wedges cook evenly.
  • Mixing Bowl: Used for tossing the potato wedges with olive oil, salt, and pepper. A large bowl gives you plenty of room to coat the wedges evenly.
  • Tongs: Handy for flipping the potato wedges halfway through cooking in the air fryer, ensuring they crisp up on all sides.
  • Measuring Spoons: For measuring the olive oil, salt, and pepper accurately, ensuring the perfect seasoning balance.

How To Make Air Fryer Potato Wedges

To start, wash the potatoes, and peel them if you want. I like to leave the skin on mine, but it’s totally a personal preference. Next, cut the potatoes in half and then slice the halves into wedges. Then put the wedges into a large bowl.

  1. Next, drizzle the potatoes with olive oil. You can also use any type of vegetable oil. Then sprinkle the wedges with salt and pepper. Now, toss everything together to coat the wedges with the oil and seasonings.

Finally, it’s time to cook the wedges! Put the seasoned potatoes into the basket of the air fryer and cook at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.

But halfway through cooking, you need to remove the air fryer basket and shake it so that all the wedges toss around. This helps the air fryer potato wedges cook more evenly. Then place the basket back into the air fryer to finish cooking.

Tips For Success

  • Choose the Right Potatoes: Russet potatoes are ideal for this recipe because of their starchy texture, which helps create a crispy exterior while keeping the inside fluffy. Avoid waxy potatoes like red or new potatoes, as they won’t yield the same crispiness.
  • Cut Uniform Wedges: To ensure even cooking, try to cut your potato wedges into similar sizes. If some wedges are thicker than others, they may not cook evenly, leaving you with some undercooked and others overly crispy. A good rule of thumb is to aim for wedges that are about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: It’s crucial to arrange the wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding. Overlapping wedges will steam instead of crisp up, so if you’re making a large batch, consider cooking them in batches for the best results.
  • Pre-Soak for Extra Crispiness: If you have a little extra time, soak the potato wedges in cold water for about 30 minutes before cooking. This step helps remove excess starch, which can lead to even crispier wedges. Just make sure to dry them thoroughly before seasoning.
  • Shake or Flip Halfway: For evenly crispy wedges, it’s important to shake the basket or use tongs to flip the wedges halfway through cooking. This ensures that all sides get exposure to the hot air, resulting in a more uniform texture.
  • Season After Cooking: While the basic salt and pepper seasoning is applied before cooking, you can enhance the flavor by sprinkling additional seasoning right after the wedges come out of the air fryer. Consider adding a touch of garlic powder, paprika, or even parmesan cheese for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Serve Immediately: Air fryer potato wedges are best enjoyed fresh and hot out of the air fryer. If they sit for too long, they may lose some of their crispiness. If you need to keep them warm, place them in a low oven (around 200°F) until you’re ready to serve.
  • Experiment with Flavors: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your seasonings. Try tossing the wedges in a mix of your favorite spices before cooking, or drizzle them with flavored oils like garlic-infused olive oil for a unique twist.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Extra Flavor: Experiment with different spice blends like smoked paprika, cumin, and chipotle powder for a smoky taste, or oregano, garlic powder, and lemon zest for a Mediterranean twist. Add cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Lower-Calorie Option: Reduce or eliminate the oil to make a lighter version. A light spray of cooking oil can help keep some crispiness while cutting down on calories. Without oil, the wedges may be less crispy but still delicious.
  • Gluten-Free: The recipe is naturally gluten-free, but if adding additional seasonings or sauces, ensure they are gluten-free as well. Double-check labels on pre-made spice mixes and condiments to keep the dish safe for those with gluten sensitivities.
  • Vegan and Dairy-Free: The basic recipe is vegan, but for a cheesy flavor without dairy, sprinkle nutritional yeast over the cooked wedges. You can also serve with plant-based dips like cashew cream or vegan sour cream to enhance the dish.
  • Herbaceous Touch: Add fresh herbs such as rosemary or thyme before air frying to infuse the wedges with earthy flavors. Garnish with chopped parsley, cilantro, or chives after cooking for a fresh, vibrant finish.
  • Protein Boost: Pair the wedges with protein-rich toppings or dips. Bacon bits or Greek yogurt dip can make the wedges more filling, while vegetarians can opt for crumbled feta or a side of hummus for added protein.

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Potato Wedges

Air fried potato wedges will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days covered or stored in a container. To reheat, just put them in the microwave for about 3 minutes on medium power or in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of potatoes for this recipe?

Yes, you can use different types of potatoes to make air fryer potato wedges, and each type will give a slightly different texture and flavor. Russet potatoes are a popular choice because they crisp up nicely and have a fluffy interior. Yukon Gold potatoes are another great option; they have a creamy texture and a buttery flavor that many people love. If you prefer a more waxy potato with a firmer texture, red potatoes can also be used. Just keep in mind that different potato types may require slight adjustments in cooking time to achieve the perfect crispiness.

Do I need to soak the potatoes before air frying?

Soaking the potato wedges in cold water before air frying is not required, but it is recommended if you want the crispiest possible wedges. Soaking helps to remove some of the starch from the potatoes, which can prevent them from sticking together and help them crisp up better. To soak the potatoes, place the wedges in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes, then drain and pat them dry thoroughly before seasoning and air frying. If you’re in a hurry, you can skip this step, but your wedges may be slightly less crispy.

How do I make sure the potato wedges cook evenly?

To ensure your potato wedges cook evenly in the air fryer, it’s important to cut them into uniform sizes. Try to make each wedge as similar in thickness and length as possible. Additionally, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket; if the wedges are too close together, they might steam instead of crisping up. Cook them in a single layer with some space between each wedge, and if you’re making a large batch, consider cooking them in multiple batches. Shaking the basket halfway through the cooking time also helps to ensure even cooking and crisping.

Can I make these potato wedges in advance?

While air fryer potato wedges are best enjoyed fresh and crispy right out of the fryer, you can make them in advance if needed. After cooking, let the wedges cool completely before storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place the wedges back in the air fryer at 375°F for about 5-7 minutes or until they’re heated through and crispy again. Avoid microwaving them, as this can make the wedges soggy.

What are some good seasoning options for potato wedges?

The beauty of potato wedges is that they’re incredibly versatile and can be seasoned with a wide variety of spices and herbs. Classic options include salt, pepper, and garlic powder. For a bit of heat, you can add paprika, chili powder, or cayenne pepper. If you prefer a more savory flavor, try seasoning with rosemary, thyme, or even a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. For a more adventurous twist, consider using taco seasoning, Cajun spices, or even a dash of smoked paprika for a smoky flavor. The key is to season generously and adjust to your taste preferences.

What dipping sauces go well with air fryer potato wedges?

Potato wedges pair well with a wide range of dipping sauces, making them a versatile side dish or snack. Ketchup is a classic choice, but you can also try ranch dressing, garlic aioli, or barbecue sauce for something different. For a spicy kick, sriracha mayo or a chipotle sauce can be excellent options. If you want something creamy, sour cream mixed with chives or a blue cheese dressing works great. The dipping sauce you choose can completely change the flavor profile of your wedges, so feel free to experiment and find your favorite combination.

Can I make these wedges oil-free?

Yes, you can make air fryer potato wedges without any oil, but they may not be as crispy as those made with a small amount of oil. If you’re looking to reduce the fat content, you can skip the oil or use a light spray of cooking spray instead. The wedges will still cook through and be tasty, but they might have a slightly drier texture. If you decide to go oil-free, it’s even more important to ensure your wedges are spaced out in the air fryer and cooked in a single layer to achieve the best possible crispiness.
