Ingredients for Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

  • Corn Tortillas – These are the base of your tortilla chips. Corn tortillas give the chips their authentic flavor and sturdy texture, perfect for dipping. You can use either white or yellow corn tortillas, depending on your preference.
  • Olive Oil – A small amount of olive oil is used to lightly coat the tortillas before air frying. This helps the chips crisp up nicely and adds a subtle richness to the flavor. Olive oil is a healthier fat option and adds a slight, pleasant flavor.
  • Salt – A sprinkle of salt is all you need to bring out the delicious flavor of the tortilla chips. You can adjust the amount of salt to taste, making the chips as salty or as mild as you like.

For the exact measurements of the ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article.

Kitchen Tools You Need to Make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

  • Air Fryer – The essential tool for this recipe, the air fryer cooks the tortilla chips to a perfect crispiness with minimal oil. It circulates hot air around the tortillas, giving them that crunchy texture without deep frying.
  • Kitchen Brush – Used to evenly coat the tortillas with olive oil. A kitchen brush helps ensure that the tortillas are lightly and uniformly covered, which is key to getting them crisp in the air fryer.
  • Sharp Knife or Pizza Cutter – For cutting the tortillas into chip-sized pieces. A sharp knife or pizza cutter will make clean, even cuts, ensuring that all your chips cook evenly.
  • Mixing Bowl – This is where you’ll toss the tortilla pieces with olive oil and salt. A mixing bowl makes it easy to evenly distribute the oil and seasoning.

  • Serve with Dips: These tortilla chips are perfect for dipping into your favorite salsas, guacamole, or queso. For a classic combination, serve them with fresh pico de gallo or a creamy avocado dip. You can also try pairing them with a spicy bean dip or a smooth hummus for a bit of variety.
  • Create a Nacho Platter: Turn these chips into a hearty snack or meal by making loaded nachos. Top the chips with melted cheese, jalapeños, black beans, diced tomatoes, and a dollop of sour cream. Add some grilled chicken or ground beef to make it even more filling.
  • Serve as a Side: These chips make a great side dish for Mexican-inspired meals. Serve them alongside tacos, burritos, or enchiladas for a crunchy contrast. They also pair well with a bowl of chili or a fresh salad.
  • Make a Snack Mix: Mix the tortilla chips with other crunchy snacks like pretzels, nuts, and popcorn for a delicious snack mix. This is a great option for parties or movie nights, offering a variety of flavors and textures in one bowl.
  • Presentation Ideas: Serve your chips in a colorful bowl or basket lined with a napkin for a festive touch. For a more elegant presentation, arrange them on a large platter with the dips placed in small bowls around the chips. This makes for an eye-catching and inviting snack table display.

Tips for Success When Making Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

  • Cut Evenly for Consistent Cooking: To ensure that all your chips cook evenly, it’s important to cut the tortillas into even pieces. Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to make clean cuts. Try to keep the chips uniform in size; this helps them all finish cooking at the same time and prevents some from burning while others are undercooked.
  • Lightly Coat with Oil: When it comes to air frying, a little oil goes a long way. Use a kitchen brush to lightly coat the tortilla pieces with olive oil. You don’t need to drench them; just a thin layer of oil will help them crisp up beautifully in the air fryer. Too much oil can make the chips greasy, so be sure to apply it sparingly.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: One of the key factors in achieving perfectly crispy chips is giving them enough space in the air fryer. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking, with some chips getting too crispy while others remain soft. Arrange the tortilla pieces in a single layer and, if necessary, cook them in batches. This ensures that the hot air circulates properly around each chip, giving you the best results.
  • Season Immediately After Cooking: To get the most out of your seasoning, sprinkle the chips with salt as soon as they come out of the air fryer. The chips are still hot and slightly oily at this point, which helps the salt adhere better. You can also add other seasonings like chili powder, lime zest, or garlic powder at this stage if you want to experiment with flavors.
  • Check Frequently: Air fryers can vary in how quickly they cook, so it’s a good idea to check on your chips regularly during the cooking process. Start checking after 5 minutes, then every couple of minutes until they’re done to your liking. This way, you can prevent them from overcooking and becoming too dark or burnt.
  • Let Them Cool: After air frying, allow the chips to cool on a wire rack or a paper towel-lined plate. This helps them firm up and achieve that perfect crunch. Cooling them in a single layer also prevents steam from making them soggy.

Cooking Tips:

  • For this recipe, you can use flour or corn tortillas.
  • As far as which size to use, this is entirely up to you. You’ll get more bang for your buck if you use burrito-sized tortillas. They are larger and you’ll user fewer tortillas.

  • Have fun with the spices and seasonings on your tortilla chips. I like squirting a dash of lime juice on them as soon as they come out of the air fryer. Sprinkle some salt  – if you like them spicier, add a dash of cayenne pepper!

Variations and Substitutions for Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

  • Different Types of Tortillas: While traditional corn tortillas are used in this recipe, you can experiment with other types of tortillas to suit different tastes and dietary needs. For a slightly different flavor and texture, try using whole wheat tortillas. These will produce a heartier chip with a nutty taste. If you’re looking for a low-carb option, consider using low-carb tortillas made from almond flour or coconut flour. These alternatives may not crisp up exactly like corn tortillas, but they offer a satisfying crunch with fewer carbs.
  • Flavored Tortillas: Spice things up by using flavored tortillas. Many grocery stores offer tortillas infused with ingredients like spinach, tomato, or chipotle. These flavored tortillas add an extra layer of taste to your chips and can pair well with specific dips or salsas. For example, tomato basil tortillas can complement a cheesy dip, while spinach tortillas might go great with a creamy spinach artichoke dip.
  • Seasoning Options: One of the best aspects of making your own tortilla chips is the ability to customize the seasoning. While salt is the classic choice, you can experiment with a wide range of spices and herbs. For a spicy kick, try sprinkling the chips with chili powder, cayenne pepper, or smoked paprika. If you prefer something tangy, a dash of lime zest or a sprinkle of Tajín (a Mexican chili-lime seasoning) can do the trick. You can also create a savory blend using garlic powder, onion powder, and a touch of cumin. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to tailor the flavor to your liking.
  • Oil Substitutions: If you’re looking to change up the oil or reduce the fat content, there are several options available. Olive oil is used in this recipe for its flavor and health benefits, but you can substitute it with other oils such as avocado oil, which has a higher smoke point and a neutral taste. For a lighter option, you can use a cooking spray made from canola or sunflower oil. Alternatively, if you’re avoiding oils altogether, you can lightly mist the tortillas with water before seasoning. This will help the spices stick, though the chips may be slightly less crispy.
  • Dietary Adjustments: To make this recipe gluten-free, ensure that the tortillas you choose are certified gluten-free. Most corn tortillas are naturally gluten-free, but it’s always good to double-check the label. For those following a vegan diet, this recipe is already vegan-friendly as it doesn’t contain any animal products. However, if you’re making nachos and adding toppings, be sure to choose vegan cheese or omit the cheese entirely.
  • Baked Instead of Air Fried: If you don’t have an air fryer, you can still make homemade tortilla chips in the oven. Simply arrange the tortilla pieces on a baking sheet, lightly brush them with oil, and bake at 350°F for 10-15 minutes, or until they’re golden and crispy. This method produces a similar result, though it might take a bit longer than using an air fryer.

What To Serve With Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

These are so fun to serve alongside your favorite homemade dips. I think the perfect thing to serve with them is a big bowl of homemade pico de gallo. If you want something a little sweeter, mix up some pineapple salsa instead!

Storage and Reheating for Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

  • Storage: To keep your air fryer tortilla chips fresh and crispy, store them in an airtight container once they’ve completely cooled. This helps prevent moisture from making the chips soggy. A resealable plastic bag or a glass jar with a tight lid works well for this purpose. Store the container in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry or cupboard. If stored properly, the chips should stay fresh for up to 1 week.
  • Reheating: If your chips lose their crispness over time, you can easily reheat them to bring back that satisfying crunch. To reheat, simply place the chips back in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes. Keep an eye on them to avoid overcooking, as they can quickly go from crispy to burnt. Alternatively, you can reheat them in the oven by spreading them out on a baking sheet and warming them at 350°F for about 5 minutes. Either method will help restore their original texture and flavor.
  • Avoid Refrigeration: It’s best to avoid storing these chips in the refrigerator, as the cool, moist environment can cause them to become stale or soft. If you accidentally refrigerate them, try reheating them as mentioned above to regain their crispiness.
  • Freezing: If you’ve made a large batch and want to store some for later, you can freeze the tortilla chips. Place them in a freezer-safe bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing. They can be frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, place the frozen chips directly in the air fryer or oven and heat at 350°F for a few minutes until they are crispy again.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

Can I use flour tortillas instead of corn tortillas?

This recipe works with any type of tortillas.  Flour tortillas will have a different texture and flavor compared to corn tortillas. Flour tortillas tend to be softer and may not crisp up as much as corn tortillas do. If you prefer a lighter, slightly chewier chip, then flour tortillas can be a good alternative. To get the best results, try cutting them into smaller pieces and check them frequently while air frying to avoid overcooking.

How do I prevent the chips from becoming too greasy?

The key to avoiding greasy chips is to use just a light coating of oil. When brushing the tortillas with oil, make sure to apply it sparingly. You only need enough to help the chips crisp up in the air fryer. Overly coating the tortillas with oil can result in greasy chips, so less is definitely more in this case. If you prefer, you can use a cooking spray to achieve a very light and even application of oil.

My chips came out soft instead of crispy. What went wrong?

If your chips came out soft, it could be due to a few factors. First, make sure you’re not overcrowding the air fryer basket; the chips need space for the hot air to circulate evenly. Cooking the chips in a single layer is crucial for getting that perfect crunch. Another factor could be the cooking time; try air frying them for a few minutes longer to achieve the desired crispiness. Also, ensure that the chips cool in a single layer on a rack or plate without being stacked, as stacking can trap moisture and make them soft.

Can I make these chips without oil?

Yes, you can make these chips without oil, though they may not be as crispy. To make oil-free tortilla chips, simply cut the tortillas into pieces, season them with salt or other spices, and air fry them. The chips might be a bit drier, but they will still have a good crunch. If you’re avoiding oil for dietary reasons, this is a great option, though the texture will differ slightly from the original recipe.

How can I make the chips spicier?

If you love spicy snacks, there are several ways to add heat to your tortilla chips. You can sprinkle the chips with chili powder, cayenne pepper, or crushed red pepper flakes before air frying. Another option is to mix a little hot sauce with the oil before brushing it onto the tortillas. For an extra kick, serve the chips with a spicy dip like jalapeño salsa or a habanero queso. Adjust the level of spiciness according to your taste preferences.

Can I make tortilla chips in the oven instead of an air fryer?

Absolutely! If you don’t have an air fryer, you can easily bake the tortilla chips in the oven. Preheat your oven to 350°F, spread the tortilla pieces on a baking sheet, lightly brush them with oil, and bake for about 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through. The chips should be golden and crispy when done. While this method takes a bit longer than using an air fryer, it produces similar results and is a great alternative.  See my article for baked tortilla chips.

How can I make the chips taste more like store-bought tortilla chips?

To achieve a taste closer to store-bought tortilla chips, consider using white corn tortillas, as they have a more neutral flavor. Additionally, you can increase the salt slightly and use a finer grain salt like popcorn salt, which sticks to the chips better. For a richer flavor, try brushing the tortillas with a mix of vegetable oil and a small amount of melted butter before air frying. This combination can help mimic the flavor and texture of traditional store-bought chips.

Can I make these chips ahead of time for a party?

Yes, these air fryer tortilla chips can be made ahead of time, making them a convenient option for parties or gatherings. After making the chips, allow them to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. They can be kept at room temperature for up to a week. If they lose some of their crispiness before serving, just pop them back into the air fryer or oven for a few minutes to refresh them.
