What is Chicken Kiev?

If you haven’t heard of chicken kiev before, it is scrumptious! It is made of a dish consisting of chicken breasts stuffed with garlic butter and then coated with breadcrumbs. The butter inside leads to a very tender and juicy consistency!

This is a traditional Russian and Ukrainian dish with its roots being traced back to French haute cuisine. Although it is not clear who initially developed the recipe, it was likely at a classy hotel or restaurant. In the 1940s and 50s it became a popular dish among high-class Soviet restaurants and especially among visiting tourists. Chicken kiev also became popular in the U.S. around the same time as symbol of Russian haute cuisine.

How to Cook Frozen Chicken Kiev in the Air Fryer

This recipe is so easy! You will have dinner on the table in no time by using the air fryer for this frozen chicken kiev.

The first step is to take out your air fryer and lightly spray it with non-stick cooking oil spray or lightly brush with some vegetable oil.

Next place the chicken kiev in the air fryer. I used one piece here but you could probably fit two in the air fryer. Just make sure not to overlap them!

Then set the temperature to 400F for 15 minutes.

Let it cook for about 8 minutes and then take out the air fryer basket and use a spatula to flip the chicken kiev over to the other side. This will ensure both sides get browned evenly.

Then return the basket to the air fryer and let it finish cooking.

When done, remove with a spatula and serve. Enjoy!

Cooking Tips:

  • If serving these to children, make sure you cut them up beforehand. Let cool down for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
  • Do not defrost, just place them in the air fryer as they are right out of the package!
