Fried apples are such a delicious dessert, but they are so often cooked in butter or oil. I wanted to make them just as yummy but without the fat!
They come out so perfectly soft and browned, and they are so wonderfully flavored. You won’t believe that they are made with just 3 ingredients!
These healthy fried apples are low fat, low calorie, gluten-free and vegetarian. I promise you, you won’t miss the butter!

How To Make Healthy Fried Apples
It takes minutes to prep and cook these apples, perfect for a midweek dessert!
Uncover the pan, add cinnamon and honey and stir to combine.
Cook for 2 more minutes, or until the apples are of desired softness.
What do you serve with these fried apples?
These apples are so delicious, you can totally eat them on their own, but there are lots of things you can eat with them:
- Ice cream – Topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you will be in seventh heaven!
- Yogurt – Vanilla or Greek yogurt works super well!
- Oatmeal – These apples aren’t just for dessert! Spoon them over some oatmeal for a yummy breakfast!
What are the best apples to use?
I like to use firm and tart apples for this recipe. They hold their shape well and the honey cuts through the tartness. Granny Smith are a great choice, but this also works well with Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious or Braeburn.
Can you make pan-fried apples ahead of time?
This is a great make ahead dessert! I often make extra to enjoy later in the week or for breakfast in the morning. Once cooked, let the apples cool to room temperature before storing in an airtight container. They will keep well for up to 3 to 5 days. The apples can be eaten cold, or you can gently reheat them on the stovetop to serve.
Can you freeze fried apples?
Yes! You can absolutely freeze these apples. They may be a little softer after thawing, but they are still delicious! Let them cool before placing in a freezer safe container. They will keep well for up to 6 months. Thaw them in the fridge overnight and reheat on the stovetop.
Spiced Fried Apples
I like to add a little ground cinnamon to these apples, the flavors work so well together! You can experiment with different spices if you like, ground cloves, nutmeg or all spice will all work well.
Use your fried apples for pies!
These apples make for a wonderful apple pie filling! Simply use them as a filling of the pie crust and bake. If you are looking for a healthy crust, check out my recipes for almond flour crust and walnut crust. In no time at all you will have a crowd pleasing dessert on your hands.
Don’t cut your apples too early!
Apples have a habit of turning brown quite quickly when they are oxidized, so only cut the apples when you are ready to cook them. If you need to cut them in advance, check out my articles on how to keep apple slices from turning brown.
I like to cut the apples into chunks as they are easier to eat this way, but you can cut them into long slices if you prefer.
Do you have to peel the apples before frying?
This is totally up to you! I like to leave some of the skin on for texture, but you can remove it all, or keep it all on. It’s totally a matter of preference!
