Instant Pot Oxtails
The instant pot is so easy to use once you learn the basics. And it is excellent for cooking up meat like Oxtails and making them juicy and tender. You can then serve the oxtails with a big salad or maybe steamed veggies topped with the delicious oxtail sauce.
We love oxtails in our house for a hearty and flavorful meal. You can use any seasonings you prefer. This recipe calls for salt & pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. You’ll use about a tablespoon of each seasoning, which is more than usual for cooking meat. Really pile on the seasoning and rub it into the meat since some of it will end up in the water of the instant pot.
Another meat that cooks up perfectly in the instant pot are chicken drumsticks— try this recipe. You’ll love the broth that cooks with the chicken in the instant pot. Pour over mashed potatoes or steamed veggies.
How To Make Oxtails in the Instant Pot
First, you’ll want to season the outside of the oxtails. I use salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika, although you can add any seasonings you prefer. Seasoning both sides and rub on oxtails to coat. NOTE: overseason the oxtails, as some of the seasoning will end up in the water of the instant pot.
Pour 1 cup of water into instant pot. Add oxtails all together, in one even layer. Place lid back on instant pot and lock into place.
Turn valve to sealing position. Press “pressure cook” button, then set timer for 45 minutes on high pressure.
Once time is up, quick release the steam. Then open the instant pot and remove the oxtails with tongs. Use a large spoon or ladle to pour sauce from the pot over the oxtails.
Cooking Tips
- Over-season the oxtails, as some of the seasoning will end up in the water
- Rub the seasonings on the oxtails to coat all over (use kitchen gloves for easy clean-up)
- Be careful when opening pressure valve and releasing steam
- After cooking, ladle broth from instant pot over oxtails for even more flavor
What To Serve with Instant Pot Oxtails
We love a simple weeknight meal of oxtails and Carrot Apple Slaw. The bright flavors of the slaw really complement the seasonings of the oxtail.
For the holidays, these Sautéed Asparagus or Green Beans pair deliciously with the seasoned oxtails. Super easy recipes too! Spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your family and friends, and still get an impressive meal to the table.
