Turkey Legs In The Instant Pot

Did you know that dark meat is where all the flavor is in both chicken and turkey!?! If you’ve tried my chicken drumsticks or turkey wings cooked in the IP then you know exactly what I’m talking about. These parts of the bird are so much more than just fried chicken or Thanksgiving.

When pressure cooked dark meat stays super juicy and tender, which makes it a delicious main course as well as a great protein that can be shredded and used in other recipes like IP Tortilla Soup or Enchiladas. And it’s yummy hot or cold! So even if you’ve got a lot of leftovers no kid or adult ever complained about getting a tasty turkey sandwich for lunch.

The other great thing about cooking turkey legs in the Instant Pot is that you can season them any way you like. If you follow this recipe they are sure to be delicious, but there are no rules in cooking. So feel free to add a sprinkle of this or that!

How to Make Instant Pot Turkey Legs

This recipe is easy peasy! No fancy or expensive ingredients are required. Yet, keep in mind that you can cook more than one turkey leg at a time and use any seasonings you like. But for my recipe this is all you need:

  • Turkey Legs
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  • Paprika

Then to start, just open your Instant Pot and add one cup of water.

Next, generously sprinkle the turkey legs on both sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Then rub the seasonings into the meat making sure that you haven’t missed any spots. And remember that it’s super important to use lots of seasoning because a good amount of it gets lost in the water.

Now, put the turkey leg in the IP, close the lid, and turn the valve to the sealing position. Then press the pressure cook button and set the time to 30 minutes on HIGH pressure.

After the Instant Pot is done cooking, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, and then quick release the remaining steam.

Then open the lid and use a digital cooking thermometer to make sure that the turkey is fully cooked and has reached an internal temperature of at least 165°F. If it hasn’t, just cook the legs for a few more minutes and then check the temperature again.
Finally, remove the turkey legs from the IP and then enjoy them with all your favorite side dishes.

Storage

Instant Pot turkey legs will keep for up to 4 days in the fridge or up to 3 months in the freezer in an airtight container or freezer bag. To reheat, put the turkey in the microwave for about 3 minutes on medium power. If frozen, it’s best to let them completely thaw out prior to reheating.

Recipe Tips

  • The turkey legs must be thawed out. Turkey that is frozen has a longer cooking time and different process. This recipe was not designed to cook frozen legs.
  • Crisp up the skin in the oven by placing the cooked turkey legs on a sheet pan under the broiler for a few minutes.
  • For food safety, use a digital cooking thermometer to test the internal temperature of the cooked turkey, which needs to have reached at least 165°F for it to be considered fully cooked.

What to Serve with Instant Pot Turkey Legs

Turkey legs can be used in lots of ways! You can eat them with a few sides or shred the meat and add it to almost anything. Here are some yummy ideas.
