How To Make Macadamia Nut Butter

Macadamia nuts are expensive, but still much cheaper than store-bought macadamia nut butter!  Macadamia nut butter is very rare and hard to find… and paying inflated prices for it doesn’t make sense when you can make your own macadamia nut butter is less than 5 minutes!

Easy Nut Butter From Macadamia Nuts

Why are macadamia nuts so expensive?

There are several reasons why macadamia nuts are the most expensive nuts:

1. Scarcity – there is limited supply of macadamia nuts compared to other nuts. Macadamia nuts are grown primarily in Australia, South Africa and Kenya with a limited harvest.

2. Long time to produce nuts – it takes a Macadamia tree 7 to 10 years to start producing nuts.

3. Hard to crack – macadamia nuts have a very thick shell (3 to 6 millimeters) that requires very tough machinery to crack.  To be able to use extra-strength pressure to crack the nuts and not to damage the inside is a challenge, so processing macadamia nuts is expensive as well.

Even though macadamia nuts are expensive, they are so incredibly delicious that I don’t mind paying for them :) Macadamias are my favorite type of nut!

The cheapest places to buy macadamia nuts are Trader Joe’s and Amazon.  For me Trader Joe’s is kind of out of the way, so I usually end up ordering them from Amazon.

I buy bags and bags of them, yum! I leave some whole for a snack, and grind some in a food processor to make this homemade macadamia nut butter!

How To Make Macadamia Nut Butter

Making your own macadamia nut butter is very easy.  All you need to do is to put macadamia nuts in a food processor or blender and process until they turn into a nut butter!

Food Processor Macadamia Nut Butter

In the first few minutes the nuts turn into crumbs, then the crumbs come together into a sticky ball and finally they turn into a creamy macadamia nut butter!

Butter From Raw Macadamia Nuts

If during the first few minutes of processing the nut crumbs stick to the sides of the food processor, pause the processing, open the bowl and scrape the sides down with a spatula so those stuck crumbs are within reach of the food processor blade.

Homemade Raw Macadamia Nut Butter

The whole process from turning raw macadamia nuts into a macadamia nut butter takes about 5 minutes.  Super easy and also cheaper than buying a store-bought macadamia nut butter!  Plus the homemade macadamia nut butter is also fresher tasting and more delicious than the one from the store!

Why are macadamia nuts so expensive?

If you want, you can add some flavorings in your homemade macadamia nut butter, such as honey, cinnamon or salt.  Personally, I like my macadamia butter pure, raw and unflavored – I think macadamians are so full of natural delicious flavor that I don’t want anything to interfere with their amazing taste!

Tips for Success

  • Choose Quality Nuts: Use fresh, high-quality macadamia nuts for the best flavor and texture. Avoid using salted or flavored varieties unless that’s your intended result.
  • Blend with Patience: The nuts will go through several stages—crumbs, a sticky ball, and then a smooth butter. Stick with it, and let the food processor do the work.
  • Pause to Scrape: Occasionally stop the processor to scrape down the sides, ensuring every bit of nut gets blended for a perfectly creamy texture.
  • No Additives Needed: Macadamia nuts are naturally rich in oils, so you don’t need to add any extra oil for blending. Let the nuts’ natural creaminess shine.
  • Customize the Flavor: While the pure nut butter is delicious on its own, you can add a touch of honey, cinnamon, or sea salt to suit your taste preferences.
  • Store It Right: Keep the butter in a clean, airtight container and refrigerate it to maintain freshness and prevent the natural oils from separating.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add a Sweet Touch: Mix in a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup for a subtly sweetened nut butter. This is great for spreading on toast or adding to desserts.
  • Try a Savory Twist: Add a pinch of sea salt to enhance the natural nutty flavor, or experiment with a dash of smoked paprika or garlic powder for a unique savory spread.
  • Combine Nuts: Blend macadamia nuts with other nuts like almonds or cashews for a mixed nut butter that offers a variety of flavors and textures.
  • Go Keto-Friendly: Use unsweetened macadamia nuts and keep it plain to make a keto-approved spread that’s rich in healthy fats.
  • Spice It Up: Add cinnamon, nutmeg, or even a touch of vanilla extract for a warm, cozy flavor perfect for fall-inspired recipes.
  • Nut-Free Option: Substitute macadamia nuts with sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds for a similar creamy spread that’s allergy-friendly.

Storage and Reheating

  • Storage: Transfer the macadamia nut butter to a clean, airtight container or glass jar with a secure lid. Store it in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent the natural oils from separating. Properly stored, it can last up to two weeks.
  • Reheating (if needed): If the butter firms up too much in the refrigerator, simply let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before using. Alternatively, you can warm a small portion in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to soften it.
  • Stir Before Use: Over time, the natural oils in the nut butter may rise to the top. This is completely normal—just give it a good stir before using.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use roasted macadamia nuts instead of raw ones?

Yes, roasted macadamia nuts can be used to make this recipe. They will give the nut butter a deeper, toasty flavor. Just be sure to use unsalted roasted nuts to maintain control over the seasoning.

Do I need to add oil to the macadamia nuts?

No, macadamia nuts are naturally rich in oils and will release enough of their own as they are processed. If your nut butter seems dry, it may just need a few more minutes of processing.

How can I make the nut butter sweeter?

You can add a tablespoon of honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar during the blending process. Keep in mind that adding sweeteners may alter the texture slightly, making it less creamy.

Can I use a blender instead of a food processor?

Yes, but it’s important to use a high-speed blender capable of handling tough tasks. Be sure to stop and scrape down the sides frequently, and blend in small batches if necessary to avoid overloading the blender.

How can I tell if my macadamia nuts are fresh?

Fresh macadamia nuts should smell mildly nutty and have a creamy white color. If they smell rancid or have a yellowish tint, they may have gone bad. Always check before using!

What should I do if the nut butter becomes too hard in the fridge?

Let the jar sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes to soften naturally. If you’re in a hurry, warm a portion in the microwave for a few seconds to make it easier to spread.

Can I freeze macadamia nut butter?

Yes, you can freeze it for longer storage. Divide it into smaller portions and freeze in airtight containers. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature before use.

Is macadamia nut butter healthy?

Macadamia nut butter is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamins, and minerals, making it a nutritious option when consumed in moderation. It’s a great choice for keto and gluten-free diets.
