“Pigs In A Blanket” is a hit with both kids and adults alike! Who wouldn’t like the juicy hot dogs wrapped in a warm freshly baked dough right out of the oven?
If you are looking for a kid-friendly dinner, look no further. It’s one of those rare recipes that even the pickiest children devour, while adults still consider it a “grownup” food. If you are having an informal gathering of family and friends of all ages, pigs in a planket is a perfect menu choice! Pigs in a blanket is also a popular super bowl party dish.
Pigs in a blanket come in all sizes – some people make it bite-size with small cocktail sausages, or you can make it with a regular size hot dog for a main dish. I always make my pigs in a blanket big, with regular size hot dogs. Wrapping lots of tiny sausages in dough is much more work than fewer big ones :) Plus I’d rather serve them as a main dish than an appetizer, as it’s much easier to come up with quick appetizers (like guac/chips and a green salad) than a main dish that everybody likes. Everybody except vegetarians that is, and if you have vegetarians in your party, you can make few of those pigs in a blanket with the imitation “vegetarian hot dogs” found in most grocery stores next to veggie burgers.
Pigs in a blanket only need 2 ingredients – the hot dogs and a refrigerated packaged dough tubes. The canned dough can be croissant, pretzel or dinner roll dough, which is found in most supermarkets in the same isle as hot dogs. For the health-conscious, you can get both the all natural hotdogs and the dough without preservatives in Whole Foods. The hog dogs can be any kind also – beef, turkey, chicken, low fat or even vegetarian. My favorite kind of dough for this recipe is pretzel rolls, and the pigs in a blanket that use pretzel dough are called pretzel dogs.
With just 2 simple ingredients, you just can’t mess this recipe up. You can even have the kids help you make it – it’s a perfect recipe for cooking together with small kids! When you wrap the sausages in dough, it doesn’t have to be perfect – if it rips, just put it back together and pinch to seal. If the dough is not the right shape, just stretch it with your fingers. When it’s baked, it will be all good, and the holes in the dough will add “character” :)

Notes
YUM! Now I want pigs in a blanket for dinner :) these are so simple but always so delicious.
My husband and I love eating them for dinner as much as our kids do :)
Thank you for sharing… tonight I’ll be attempting to make these for the family looks like a fun Friday night meal
I’m no kid but count me in for these pigs in a blanket please! :)
Yes, all the adults line up for these pigs in a blanket – yum!
This was totally one of my favourite meals as a kid and it would also be as an adult if I hadn’t forgotten they existed!!
Well, now that I reminded you that they exist I hope you’ll make some :) I’m sure you’ll enjoy them!
we don’t get dough like this here, but what a great idea :)
No refrigerated dough in tubes? Wow, there are some many things I take for granted, and now the refrigerated dough is one of them :) Of course you can also use homemade dough, like the savory pie dough or pizza dough – I have some dough recipes on this site that use the food processor or bread machine to mix the dough, making it easy.
Hehe the first and only time I’ve tried these was when we made them as mummy hot dogs for Halloween! And I realised that I had been missing out because they were so fun! :D
I’ve seen the mummy hot dog Halloween recipe somewhere on Pinterest, and remember thinking to myself – I have these kinds of hot dogs year round!
I love pigs in a blanket! They are such a great appetizer for kids and adults alike!
Try them as a main dish instead of appetizer, using big hot dogs – this makes a super-easy yummy dinner!
These bring back fun memories. In Australia we don’t have any sort of bread in a can – it’s home made or nothing. :)
You are the second person who mentioned that about lack of canned dough – I now realize I’ve been taking this convenience product for granted :) You can make a gourmet version with the homemade dough – it will be even better!
Yum! Love this quick and easy dinner! The pretzel dogs sound especially good!
Thanks Meghan! The pretzel dog version is my favorite too!
Like an Auntie Anne’s!!! Now I can make them myself! Thanks!
Are you hot dogs boiled before you place them in the oven ?
No, they are uncooked. They will cook in the oven.
I have made these for quite a few years now and the last ten years or so I have used the jumbo franks and sliced them about half way though the frank length ways and put Jalapenos just to spice things up a bit the adults love them and as usual I don’t make enough.
I put them in at 400 for 20 minutes like it said and checked it at 10 minutes and they were almost burnt. Thankfully I checked when I did. Just a tip for everyone, keep an eye on them every couple minutes. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
I’m making some right now but I used the manda jalepeno and cheese sausages and I hope it works the same way
it is good could you send out another
I made this two months ago for a homeless shelter dinner and the guests devoured them. They were so excited to have them. I’m making them again this Friday, though I’m making twice as much as I did last time. I for sure won’t run out this time.
Easy dinner after getting home from our workplace for my husband & me…he had regular hotdogs & I had veggie dogs. Delicious. Thanks!
So easy to make and always delicious love this recipe!
Great recipe for a quick and tasty dinner.
