What’s in a taco seasoning? Taco seasoning is a mix of 8 common spices: chili powder, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika, salt and pepper.  To make your own taco seasoning, just measure out the spices in quantities according to the recipe card on the bottom of this page and mix together for amazing homemade taco spice mix!

This recipe makes just enough taco seasoning for one time (the equivalent to one taco seasoning packet).  Once you try it and see how amazing it tastes, you’ll probably want to make a huge batch!  Great news is that you can easily scale the recipe to make a bigger portion.  To make a huge jar of the homemade taco seasoning, just multiply all the spice quantities by 10, mix everything and store in a mason jar.

How Much Taco Seasoning To Use Per Pound

Once you made your own taco seasoning, you might be wondering – how much of that seasoning should I use in my recipe?  I like a lot of spice and flavor, so I use 2 tbsp of taco seasoning per each pound of meat.  I recommend starting out with 1 tablespoon per pound, then try the food after it’s cooked to see if it’s enough seasoning for you.  If you’d like more flavor, then add more taco seasoning, 1 teaspoon at a time, until the taste is perfect for you.  Once you determine how much taco seasoning you like to use to your taste, just remember this amount for the future.
