How To Make Tomato Gravy
Start by melting 4 Tablespoons of butter in a stock pot (medium-sized) on the stove. Heat to high, and once the butter melts, reduce to medium for the remainder of cooking time.
Add the flour and whisk constantly for a few minutes, or until smooth. The flour will turn a slight golden brown color and will smell “cooked”. That is when you know the mixture is ready for the next step.
Add the tomatoes and whisk to combine, about 5 minutes. At this point, you can add chicken stock to thin it out or leave it as thick as it is. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Turn off heat and pour into serving bowl or vessel.
Cooking Tips
- Be sure to stir the flour and butter constantly until incorporated. This will result in a smooth consistency that is needed for the gravy
- If you choose to use fresh tomatoes, you’ll need about 4 total. Peel them and crush the tomatoes before adding to stock pot
- Use the chicken stock to thin the tomato gravy according to your preference
What Is the Difference Between a Sauce and a Gravy?
Gravies are a semi-solid, thick mixture, whereas sauces are more liquid-based. You can add chicken stock, olive oil, or water to a gravy to thin it out according to your preference or recipe needs.
What Is Tomato Gravy Used For?
So many delicious uses! It’s a thick mixture, so it’s a perfect topping for baked goods like biscuits and toast. Or you can use it as a sauce and serve with pasta, vegetables, or meat. It’s a very versatile side dish.
What Is Tomato Gravy Made Of?
Traditionally, it is made with canned or fresh tomatoes, a roux (flour and butter), plus chicken stock and seasonings.
